5 Important Tips for Traveling with Kids: Car, Train, Boat, and Plane

Traveling with kids can be an adventure filled with memorable moments and occasional challenges. Whether you’re embarking on a road trip, taking a train, setting sail on a boat, or flying to a far-off destination, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a smooth journey.

Tips To Take note Of Before Travelling With Your kids

I want to take you through five important tips to help you make your travels with your kids enjoyable and stress-free.

1. Pack Smart and Light

Traveling with Kids

When traveling with kids, packing can feel overwhelming. The key is to pack smart and light while ensuring you have all the essentials.

  • Always include a first-aid kit, snacks, water bottles, wet wipes, diapers (for babies), and a change of clothes for each kid.
  • Bring along some appropriate toys, books, or tablets loaded with educational games and movies to keep them occupied and entertained.
  • Use packing cubes or separate bags for each kid’s belongings to make it easy to find what you need quickly and to avoid misunderstandings and petty fights among them

Keeping your luggage organized and accessible helps you stay prepared for any situation without being overloaded with unnecessary items.

2. Plan for Frequent Breaks

Traveling with Kids

Kids have shorter attention spans and higher energy levels, which means they need more frequent breaks to stretch and move around. Whether you’re traveling by car, train, boat, or plane, make sure to:

  • Plan stops at rest areas or parks every couple of hours. Let the kids run around and burn off some energy. This is done when you’re traveling with your car.
  • Train: Walk through the train cars and take advantage of any scenic stops or layovers.
  • Boat: Explore different parts of the boat, participate in onboard activities, or simply take a walk on the deck.
  • Plane: Encourage kids to walk up and down the aisle when it’s safe to do so, and use layover times to explore the airport.

Frequent breaks help prevent restlessness and crankiness, making the journey more pleasant for everyone.

3. Stay Flexible with Your Schedule

Traveling with Kids

Traveling with kids means things might not always go as planned. Delays, tantrums, and unexpected events can happen. To stay flexible

  • Always leave extra time in your schedule for unforeseen delays and additional breaks.
  • Be ready to change plans if necessary. If a child needs a nap, find a quiet spot to rest, even if it means altering your flight plan.
  • Understand that you might not see or do everything you originally planned. The goal is to make the journey enjoyable for everyone.

A flexible mindset helps reduce stress and allows you to adapt to any situation that arises.

4. Prioritize Safety and Comfort

Traveling with Kids

Ensuring your kids’ safety and comfort during travel is paramount. Here’s how to prioritize both:

  • Car: Use appropriate car seats and seat belts. Pack blankets and pillows for comfort during long drives.
  • Train: Keep an eye on children when moving between cars and ensure they understand the rules of train travel.
  • Boat: Equip kids with life jackets and familiarize them with boat safety protocols.
  • Plane: Make sure kids are securely fastened during takeoff, landing, and turbulence. Bring a favorite blanket or stuffed animal to comfort them.

By focusing on safety and comfort, you create a secure environment that allows kids to relax and enjoy the journey.

5. Engage and Involve Your Kids

Traveling with Kids

Involving your kids in the travel process can make the experience more exciting and educational for them. Here’s how to engage them:

  • Before the trip, talk to your kids about the destination and what to expect. Show them pictures and maps to spark their interest.
  • Plan interactive activities such as travel journals, or photography challenges.
  • Give older kids small responsibilities like carrying their own backpacks, choosing snacks, or navigating with a map.

Engaging kids in the travel process not only keeps them entertained but also helps them learn and feel more involved in the adventure.

Conclusion

Traveling with kids can be a joyful and rewarding experience with the right preparation and mindset. By packing smart, planning for breaks, staying flexible, prioritizing safety, and engaging your kids, you set the stage for a memorable journey filled with fun and family bonding. In this article, we will explore the importance of self-care for moms, understand the challenges they face, identify signs of burnout and depression, and provide practical self-care ideas that can be easily incorporated into their daily routines. By embracing self-care, moms can overcome guilt, find balance, and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.

The Importance of Self-Care for Moms

Being a mom is a full-time job that requires immense physical and emotional energy. It’s easy for moms to put their own needs last, but this can have detrimental effects on their well-being. Self-care is not selfish; it is a necessary practice that allows moms to recharge, prevent burnout, and be the best versions of themselves for their families. By taking care of their own physical, mental, and emotional health, moms can better handle the challenges of motherhood and create a positive environment for their children to thrive.

Understanding the Challenges Faced by Moms

Moms face a unique set of challenges that can make self-care seem like an impossible task. From sleepless nights with newborns to the constant juggling act of balancing work and family, it’s no wonder that many moms feel overwhelmed and exhausted. The pressure to be a “perfect” mom and meet societal expectations can also contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety. It is important for moms to acknowledge these challenges and understand that taking care of themselves is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Signs of Burnout and Depression in Moms

The demands of motherhood can sometimes lead to burnout and even depression. It’s crucial for moms to be aware of the signs and seek help when needed. Some common signs of burnout include chronic fatigue, irritability, feelings of overwhelm, and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Depression in moms can manifest as feelings of sadness, guilt, hopelessness, and a lack of motivation. If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it is important to reach out to a healthcare professional for support and guidance.

Prioritizing Your Well-Being: Why It Matters

Prioritizing your well-being as a mom is not only beneficial for yourself but for your entire family. When you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to handle the challenges of motherhood and provide a nurturing and supportive environment for your children. By prioritizing your well-being, you are setting a positive example for your children and teaching them the importance of self-care. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup, so taking the time to replenish yourself is essential for long-term happiness and fulfillment.

Self-Care Ideas for Busy Moms

Finding time for self-care can be a challenge for busy moms, but it is not impossible. Here are some practical self-care ideas that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine:

  1. Start small: Begin by carving out just 10 minutes a day for yourself. Use this time to engage in an activity that brings you joy, such as reading a book, taking a walk, or practicing deep breathing exercises.
  2. Delegate tasks: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Delegate household chores or childcare responsibilities to your partner, family members, or friends. Remember, you don’t have to do it all alone.
  3. Create a self-care routine: Establish a daily self-care routine that includes activities you enjoy. This could be anything from taking a warm bath to practicing yoga or meditation. Consistency is key.
  4. Connect with other moms: Building a support system of other moms can be incredibly beneficial. Join local mom groups, connect with other moms online, or attend parenting workshops to share experiences and gain support.
  5. Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and let go of the idea of being a “perfect” mom. Remember that you are doing your best, and it’s okay to prioritize your well-being.

Incorporating Self-Care into Your Daily Routine

Incorporating self-care into your daily routine is essential for maintaining your well-being as a mom. Here are some tips to help you make self-care a priority:

  1. Schedule it: Treat self-care like any other important appointment by scheduling it in your calendar. Set aside dedicated time each day for self-care activities and stick to the schedule.

  3. Involve your children: Self-care doesn’t have to be done alone. Involve your children in activities that promote self-care, such as going for a family hike or practicing mindfulness exercises together. This not only benefits you but also teaches your children the importance of self-care from an early age.
  4. Practice mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine by taking a few moments to pause, breathe, and be present. Mindfulness can help reduce stress, improve focus, and promote overall well-being.

  3. Set boundaries: Learn to set boundaries with your time and prioritize self-care. Communicate your needs to your family and ask for their support in allowing you to have dedicated time for yourself.
  4. Outsource when possible: Consider outsourcing tasks that can free up some of your time for self-care. This could include hiring a babysitter for a few hours a week or using meal delivery services to alleviate some of the cooking responsibilities.

Creating a Support System for Moms

Creating a support system is crucial for moms to navigate the challenges of motherhood and prioritize their well-being. Here are some ways to build a support system:

It can be easy to get caught up in the demands of work and neglect your personal life or vice versa. However, finding a healthy balance between the two is crucial for your overall well-being.

To achieve this balance, it’s important to set boundaries and establish a routine that allows you to fulfill your professional obligations while also dedicating quality time to your family. This may involve setting specific work hours, delegating tasks, or seeking support from your spouse, family, or childcare providers. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help and delegate responsibilities to ensure that you have time for yourself and your loved ones.

Strategies for Balancing Work and Motherhood

1. Prioritize and Delegate

As a working mom, it’s important to prioritize your tasks and focus on what truly matters. Identify your top priorities at work and at home, and delegate or eliminate tasks that are not essential. This will help you manage your time more effectively and reduce unnecessary stress.

2. Set Realistic Expectations

It’s crucial to set realistic expectations for yourself both at work and at home. Understand that you may not be able to excel in every aspect of your life simultaneously. Be kind to yourself and remember that you are doing the best you can. Accepting that perfection is not attainable will help alleviate unnecessary pressure and allow you to enjoy the journey of balancing work and motherhood.

3. Practice Self-Care

Taking care of yourself is essential for maintaining a healthy work/life balance. Make time for self-care activities that rejuvenate and energize you. This could include exercise, meditation, pursuing hobbies, or simply indulging in some alone time. Remember, when you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to take care of others.

Tips for Finding Support and Resources

1. Connect with Other Working Moms

Seeking support from other working moms can be incredibly valuable. Joining online communities or attending local networking events for working moms can provide a platform for sharing experiences, tips, and advice. These connections can help you feel less isolated and provide you with a support system of like-minded individuals who understand the unique challenges you face.

2. Utilize Technology

In today’s digital age, technology can be a valuable tool for working moms. Explore apps and software that can help you organize your schedule, manage tasks, and stay connected with your family. From calendar apps to meal planning tools, there are numerous resources available to streamline your daily life and make juggling work and motherhood more manageable.

3. Seek Professional Help if Needed

If you find yourself struggling to cope with the demands of being a working mom, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Therapists, coaches, and counselors can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs. Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Embracing Opportunities in Work and Motherhood

Achieving work/life balance as a working mom is an ongoing journey that requires constant adjustments and self-reflection. It’s important to remember that it’s not about achieving a perfect balance every day, but rather finding harmony in the ebb and flow of life. By implementing these essential tips and strategies, you can navigate the challenges of being a modern working mom with confidence, grace, and resilience.

So, fellow working moms, let’s embrace the opportunities that come with balancing work and motherhood. Together, we can create fulfilling careers and nurturing families while finding that elusive work/life balance we all strive for.

Meet the Women Shaping the Ghanaian Production of PPEs

The coronavirus has posed some problems for our nation, including closing of borders, limited supply of protective wear etc. But just as they say there’s a silver lining in every cloud, this pandemic has brought to the fore the creativity of some Ghanaian women; four of them being selected by government to produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for frontline health workers amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

These women are:

  • Nora Bannerman, founder of Sleek Garments Export Ltd and MD of the Africa Sleek Institute of Creativity and Technology; whose businesses have employed over 120 people to produce quality clothes to be sold internationally.
  • Adjo Asare, CEO of Alfie Designs, who makes use of manufacturing and ethical fashion as a means of creating job opportunities and improving the lives of women and girls in her community.
  • Linda Ampah, a Ghanaian fashion designer who through her passion has shared Africa’s  prints with the world and has a desire to help empower women throughout Ghana.
  • Madam Salma Salifu, a Ghanaian businesswoman and the Managing Director of Dignity DTRT, a garment factory in Ghana which employs over 1500 workers and is located in capital city Accra,  Ghana.

The amazing thing about the stories of these women is how they turned their factories into a production house for Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), to meet the demand for frontline health workers who are overwhelmed with fighting the virus and need as much basic protective gear as possible.

Let’s get to know these women, shall we?

Nora Bannerman

With a background in fashion, Nora is passionate about local businesses and has played a key role in the Ghanaian clothing and textile industry. Her company, Sleek Garments Export Ltd, is popularly known for exporting about 75,000 men’s shirts to the US under the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) and has been described as one of the success stories of this Act established in the US in 2000. Her business has promoted the beauty of items Made-in-Ghana and she has had the opportunity to showcase her works on fashion platforms in different countries such as France and the US.

Every success story of course has a beginning, and Nora’s began with her mother’s sewing machine.  As her passion grew over the years, she worked with determination to develop her gift to make an impact and become a solid business, which she now runs with her daughter.

She loves to organize skill development courses for young and especially needy women, to equip them with skills to thrive in the fashion industry or go a step further to start their own businesses. She played a pivotal role in placing Ghana on the AGOA map to enable the nation export over 6,000 products to the US without duties.

Her business, Sleek Garments, now manufactures PPEs for Ghana including surgical gowns, 2 ply masks for medical personnel, scrubs, doctors’ coats, and reusable masks for public use, approved by the FDA. Mother’s Day Interview: Bayabs Enterprise

Meet Yvonne Rashida Bakuri, the creator of Bayabs Enterprise

It has been quite a journey for Yvonne– it wasn’t until her maternity that she discovered she had a passion for fashion and creative designing.  In our May feature Read her interview to learn more about her and her business Bayabs Enterprise.

How did you start your journey as a Mompreneur?
I was home on maternity and bored. At that time, I had made and worn an african print shoe with a matching clutch bag to a wedding and friends,  family and friends of friends were texting/contacting me to make some for them so I decided to indulge them and gradually that become a business.

What inspired you to take that path in business?
Friends and Family were and still are my inspiration.

A little bit about your company and what you do?
Bayabs Enterprise is the company. The brand Bayabs is a clothing and accessories brand that makes contemporary clothing and accessories with African print. The businesses started in April 2015.

A little background about yourself?

My name is Yvonne Rashida Bakuri. I’m a wife and a mother of 3. I hold a BSc. in Development planning from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. I’m also a resettlement expert. I am the creative behind Bayabs.

How you manage your day to day activities?
Listing down what I need to do and at what time I have to do it.

How are you able to balance taking care of your family and manage the business?

For me, Family comes first. I can only concentrate on work when my family has been taken care of. The kids leave for school and then I get to work. I don’t have help. So I need to be home before they get home. I try to do what I cannot do at home quickly before it’s time to get home. I plan with my head tailor on what needs to be done before getting home. I respond to emails and Whatsapp messages, take pictures, prepare orders for shipping /posting at home. When I cannot go to the post myself, i make arrangements for them to be picked up by a delivery company/person so delegating even though it is difficult for me, I have learnt to delegate more of my responsibilities with close supervision. I also have a very great support system. When my husband is in town, he helps a lot. My mom and siblings are especially helpful when I need them.

What are the challenges you face?
Cashflow: Like most small businesses, the money won’t stay. The bulk of the money you make goes into paying bills.
Balancing quality with growth. As we grow and we employ more hands, making sure employees pay attention to detail without having to micro manage that aspect is  a great challenge for me but I’m working hard towards my quality control.
Shipping/Delivery, when you do not control delivery, it is difficult especially with shipping outside the country. Delivery has not been too reliable so i have had to factor delivery periods into completing orders

Most Ghanaians not too trusting of online shops. I do not have a brick and mortar shop. I take orders via Whatsapp and through the website. Most of my clients are based outside the country. I realized Ghanaians resident in the country have issues shopping online. They do not trust the online system from my observation.
Power supply. Even though dumsor (erratic power outage) has ended, we still get occasional power outage.

What are the processes and systems that have helped you in your entrepreneurial journey?

To do lists! I try to write down the days work the previous night(Invoices i need to send out, emails and whatsapp messages I need to respond to, follow ups, fabric shopping or sorting, design and pattern cutting, shipping, calls to make, orders to fulfill on the website etc) Listing them down helps a lot.I rely on technology a lot and that has been very very helpful. Apps help a great deal. Those that help with scheduling social media posts, creating invoices on the go, having meetings through WhatsApp calls and skype videos etc.Delivery/Dispatchers are a welcome.Getting photographers for photoshoots.

Social media(social media ads) has helped with marketing my products to new customers since I do not have a brick and mortar shop.

These are processes, procedures and systems that have been very helpful to me.

9. Advise to any young one who wants to start a business.

Dream big. Don’t be shy to start small but be ready to sacrifice and WORK.  HARD!!!!

Making A Difference In our Communities- Story of Ayisha Fuseini

I was a guest at the just ended Invest In Africa SME Excellence Awards last week Thursday 25th January, 2018. Invest in Africa (IIA) is a not-for-profit organization with the vision to create thriving African economies. Working in partnership with both private and public sector companies, IIA more effectively identifies and tackles the challenges of doing business in Africa, delivering more impactful and cost- efficient solutions.
The IIA SME Excellence Awards was organized to honor indigenous businesses who through IIA’s business linkage and skills development programmes have demonstrated innovative potential and developed capacity to scale up and participate in supply chains of larger organizations ( both local and international)

I was impressed when three women grabbed awards in different categories. One woman that caught my attention was Ayisha Fuseini. Ayisha grabbed two awards which included her award for being the Woman Entrepreneur for the year. Ayisha Fuseini took the award on behalf of her company ASHEBA Enterprise. I decided to hang around a while so I speak to her after the awards ceremony ended.

I approached her and I must say she was very welcoming. I introduced myself to her and told her I would like to feature her on my blog to which she readily gave me the opportunity to take a picture with and get some information from her website to facilitate my article.
HER STORY………………
ASHEBA Enterprise was founded by Ayisha Fuseini in 2012 to help rural women produce quality Shea butter and access to premium price.
Ayisha, the third child in a family of ten, had struggled to meet school going costs, watching her mother earn very little money processing Shea butter at the bottom of the supply chain.
Supported by Camfed in partnership with The MasterCard Foundation Innovation Bursary Program, she came up with a business idea that would change the economic dynamics in her community. As the CEO of Asheba Enterprise, she is now working with a co-operative of women to produce Shea butter for her value-added products for local, national, and international markets.
With the dream of seeing every woman have access to automation and fair compensation, she organizes Shea butter producers into one production center to produce high quality Shea butter for export market to help them improve the livelihood for their family. In Ghana over 50% of the population is involved in Shea butter production. By selling fruits, seeds, nuts and leaves, women earn their own income.
An estimated 88 per cent of rural women are illiterate, and have limited technical skills to improve the quality of their butter or acquire information about market trends. Even when they do have the skills or knowledge, few women have access to formal credit to purchase Shea butter presses or to better promote their products.
“Now organizations and cooperatives call me to train them on Shea butter processing and value addition.”,  Ayisha Fuseini.

My Top 4 Characteristics of Successful Mompreneurs

The recent feature of women in Start Up programs and awards shows how female entrepreneurship journey is picking up in our part of the world.

The 2010 GEM survey reveals that women are more entrepreneurial than men in Ghana. The total entrepreneurial activity survey held in 2010 showed that almost 60% of the population for entrepreneurs were female and only about 42% were males. These shows a lot of women are moving into setting up their own business.

Its means we are doing great as entrepreneurs! I engaged with a couple of women managing their own business and realized most of these women took this decision after they started their families and giving birth. Owing and managing your own business  gives them the opportunity to make time for their families and plan their day to suit their own schedules.
Moving in entrepreneurship also allows women to explore their God – given talent and it through this that we are able to utilize our skills and push to be successful

Today I will share with you my Top 4 characteristics for mothers who become successful entrepreneurs.
1. Organized:  As an entrepreneur it is important that you organize your day and plan. Preparing a schedule allows you to stay organized and also prioritize what needs to be achieved for the day. Though you may organize your day, there sure will be times where you would have to be flexible and not go strictly by the plan. Do not worry , it happens!

2. Self-Motivated:  It is important to be self-motivated as a Mompreneur. It is one thing to deal with your business, but another thing to deal with family ( husband, kids) and even your own self sometimes all at the same time. Make sure you ignite the passion for your business every single day. Work it girl…you can do it if you believe!

3. Balance: It is beautiful and inspiring to see how some women are able to balance their lives at work and home. Some Mothers even work two jobs. They work for an employer and also have some personal business by the side. They come home to work for the family as well. Balancing your life allows you to be at peace with yourself. Don’t forget about yourself though whilst you try to balance your business and your family needs. You are important!

4. Sociable: Mothers who are business owners and are very sociable have the high tendency of being very successful in business. Our current world demands that we most times thrive on networking to propel your business. To build a successful business you need to build good relationships and connect with people on a personal level. When you connect on that level you are able to create a more lasting relationship  and helps to move your business. Get your groove on and go out there!

It is possible to make it in your business and be successful. You just need to  adjust with your environment and do things right.
